THIS IS JESUS. He’s been a dishwasher at Community Plate since opening day, 2011. He was also on the opening team for Thistle Restaurant, working dinner service at night, but is now full time at Community Plate and one of the hardest workers on staff. He loves being busy, so weekends are his favorite time to be in the restaurant and when asked about his contribution to the team, he’s direct. “I like being helpful. When it’s busy, that’s when they need me most.”
Indeed. Anyone in restaurants will tell you that the dishwasher is a critical team member. When the dish pit goes down, the “machine” that is the back of the house shuts down too. Having a great dishwasher can increase the efficiency of the entire team exponentially. Jesus “sees” a dining room as well as any professional server and can anticipate the needs of customers before they get up from their seats. When Jesus is on the schedule, water bottles are always full, we never run out of glassware, plates are stacked and napkins stocked. What other restaurants call “side” work is what Jesus handles as a matter of course. And he takes great pride in all of it.
